In 2010 I launched "MOLTENi Net Works", installing hand made basketball nets on empty urban hoops around Boston and Cambridge. I invited an incredible team of Boston-based and international artists to help and we quickly evolved into the New Craft Artists in Action collective by which many more athletic and craft-based installations, workshops, and programs have been executed internationally. Above are various examples of NCAA Net Works that I've made over the years. #NCAANetWorks.
After much public interest in participation, we decided to create and self-publish a manual that spread to neighborhoods and schools across the globe. Net Works: Learn to Craft Handmade Nets for Empty Basketball Hoops in Your Neighborhood is an educational resource that offers thoroughly illustrated instructions for knit and crochet, basketball net patterns submitted by artists in over 10 cities, and writings about the influence of craft and athletics in various urban settings.
NCAA team players took on the challenge of creating knit and crochet instructions that are holistic and approachable, hoping to empower and inspire a new generation of makers and players. The book features photos, hand-drawn illustrations, diagrams, charts, patterns and written accounts by those who have experienced Net Works in their communities.
